Abstract
One of the important issues of the ¡®disaster inequality¡¯ that can occur from COVID-19 is that there are more vulnerable groups within the older adults group. The influence of COVID-19 on the cognitive function of the older adults may be different by the household types. The purpose of this study is to examine whether the effects of COVID-19 on the cognitive function of the older adults differ according to the household types. For this purpose, the 7th and 8th data of the panel data of Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KLoSA) were used, and the individual fixed effect in difference-in-difference analysis was used as the research method.
The results of this study are as follows: First, the cognitive function of the older adults living alone decreased more than older adults non-living alone at a statistically significant level by COVID-19. Second, there was no difference in the cognitive function of the older adults living alone and the older adults non-living alone by age and gender. Third, the cognitive function of the older adults living alone, especially in the non-economic activity, was significantly decreased by COVID-19. According to these results, we identified vulnerable groups in cognitive function in COVID-19 and suggested social welfare practice plans for appropriate intervention.
